Episode 4 of "We Were The Lucky Ones" unfolds amidst the turmoil of 1941, where Mila toils in a factory, her nimble fingers stitching together garments with meticulous care. Felicia, a few years her elder, sits beside her mother, mirroring her every move. Intriguing news reaches Mila's ears – those escaping to Palestine have kin awaiting their arrival, a beacon of hope amidst despair.
A routine inspection looms, and in a heartbeat of ingenuity, Mila conceals Felicia within a box, buried beneath a mountain of fabrics. As the authorities scrutinize every corner, Katzman, the factory's overseer, is apprehended for smuggling contraband. Fortunately, Felicia remains undetected, her breath held in silent prayer.
Returning home, Mila encounters her mother with a heart-wrenching proposition: to send Felicia to a foster family beyond the ghetto's confines, a sanctuary from impending doom. Palestine whispers of a future, yet its gates are narrow, acceptance a distant dream. Fearful for Felicia's safety, Mila reluctantly agrees. Sol, Nechuma, and Mila bundle Felicia in a blanket, smuggling her past the ghetto walls to a trusted ally, who promises to deliver her to her new family.
Days pass, and a note arrives like a cold wind, bearing the heartbreaking news: Felicia is returning, rejected by her foster family who deemed her "too Jewish."
Elsewhere, Halina's journey takes her to a hospital, her rare blood type a target for exploitation. The nurse, relentless, nearly drains her before releasing her into the unforgiving streets. Weak and weary, Halina stumbles towards Adam's home, where he welcomes her with open arms, nurturing her back to health. Together, they plot their next move amidst Germany's declaration of war on the Soviet Union, seeking refuge in the wisdom of Jakob and Bella.
The Underground convenes, minds racing with strategies to evade the German onslaught on Lvov. They devise a plan to spirit away the most vital individuals, Adam among them. Troubled, Adam steps outside, where Halina confronts him with a kiss, revealing his desire to stay with her. His love for her has always been steadfast, yet Halina insists, "They need you more than I do."
Meanwhile, Addy finds himself ensnared in a Moroccan detention camp. He offers to procure supplies, weaving a web of bribery with two Moroccan officers. While the soldiers await his return, Addy slips away, a shadow in the marketplace, searching vainly for Eliska and her mother. A fortuitous encounter with an old friend leads him to whispers of the last ships departing from Cadiz, Spain. With his friend's guidance, Addy tracks down Eliska, a beacon of hope amidst the chaos.
After Addy concludes his shower, he urgently informs Eliska and his mother that their departure for Cadiz is imperative. Eliska's mother hesitates, clinging to the notion that their money will shield them from harm. However, Addy firmly repeats that safety cannot be bought, regardless of wealth, and they must flee. Later, Eliska agrees to accompany Addy, who then proposes to her, and they share a tender kiss.
The following day, as the trio prepares to leave, two Moroccan officers arrive in search of Addy. However, they manage to slip away unscathed. Elsewhere, in Lvov, the people rejoice over Germany's invasion, having a stronger hatred for the Soviets and remaining oblivious to the grim situation unfolding in Radom and other western cities. Halina and Jakub witness a procession hailing the Nazis, which quickly descends into a harrowing pogrom. They narrowly escape, with Jakub rushing to find Bella.
Meanwhile, Bella, who is staying at her pregnant sister's house, learns about the riot and sets out to locate Jakub. Just as Bella witnesses a man being shot in the head point-blank by an officer after pleading for help, Jakub grabs her and they take refuge in a nearby basement, where Halina also joins them. They remain in the basement for three days without food until an Underground member discovers them and provides sustenance.
The Underground member informs them that death squads have arrived and are murdering people in the most brutal ways imaginable. Halina becomes worried when she realizes that Adam did not leave.
Elsewhere, Mila encounters a poster advertising safe passage to Palestine for intelligentsia. She tries to enroll her parents but fails. However, she manages to secure spots for herself and Felicia by pretending that her husband, a doctor, will join them in Palestine. As they bid farewell to Sol and Nechuma, Mila promises to send for them once she settles.
On their journey, their truck is stopped by the Germans, who herd them into a circle and order them to dig a hole. They shoot anyone who attempts to escape. Mila spots a man who manages to save himself due to his experience assisting the SS. Subsequently, another woman charms the officer, and Mila instructs Felicia to run up to her and pretend to call her mother. Felicia follows her instructions, and the woman, realizing the coded message, hugs Felicia and claims her as her own. They safely return to the truck.
Meanwhile, the soldiers round up the prisoners, order them to undress, and begin shooting them. As the episode concludes, Mila starts running towards the trucks.
