Actor Song Hye-kyo candidly confronted malicious rumors surrounding her during her highly anticipated first talk show appearance in 23 years on tvN's "You Quiz on the Block," which aired on Wednesday. With a note of sincerity, Song remarked, "Initially oblivious to their existence, I've come to realize, after years of dedication to my craft, that numerous rumors about me abound. Occasionally, even those I encounter for the first time inquire about these rumors. My usual response is, 'I've only heard about them myself, so perhaps it would be quicker to ask the originator.'"
Host Yoo Jae-suk, empathizing deeply with her plight, echoed, "Sometimes, rumors compel one to explain matters that require no explanation. It's best to clarify with the source." Song concurred, adding, "Criticism has become so commonplace that I've grown accustomed to it. Personal targeting no longer fazes me, but when my family is implicated, it shatters my heart."
During an interview with the production team, Song delved deeper, sharing, "From a tender age, I've encountered both petty and significant rumors. Given my profession, I've often let them pass me by like water through a sieve. However, there were instances where I thought, 'This has gone too far.' Once, someone confronted me directly about a rumor, and I replied, 'If I knew the truth, I'd certainly answer, but as I've only heard gossip, I have nothing to say.'"
When questioned about how she coped with the emotional burden of these rumors, Song credited screenwriter Noh Hee-kyung, stating, "During that time, I was in constant touch with her, and she advised me, 'To share love with others, you must first love yourself.' She suggested a practice of self-reflection – writing about how I intended to spend each day in the morning and listing ten things I was grateful for each evening. I adhered to this routine for five years, ceasing only last year."
Song also opened up about her journey towards self-acceptance and contentment, saying, "I've come to understand that desiring something too intently often means it remains out of reach. Now, I let things unfold naturally, sans regrets for the past." She continued, "As a woman, a human, and an actress, I've experienced joy, adversity, sorrow, and happiness – the quintessence of life. Though some moments were challenging, I view them as invaluable lessons for progression. Focusing on my emotions has brought me greater happiness."
Revealing that her recent mindset shift coincided with her role in Netflix's hit series "The Glory" (2022-23), Song expressed, "If someone dislikes 'human Song Hye-kyo,' I hope they at least appreciate 'actress Song Hye-kyo.' This motivation fueled my acting endeavors." Reflecting on her career in her forties, she admitted, "I can no longer rely solely on my appearance. Young actors possess a different edge. Now, I feel an urgency to truly excel in my acting."
