Karla Mosley has gracefully returned to daytime television, taking the spotlight in CBS's dramatic series "Beyond the Gates" as Dani Dupree, a former model who has transformed into a mother-manager. Prior to this, Mosley delighted audiences as the fashionable model Maya Avant in "The Bold and the Beautiful," a character she recently confessed she wouldn't revisit. Maya, who debuted in 2013, made headlines in 2015 when her storyline revealed her as transgender.
"When my supervisor floated the idea of me tackling this narrative, my initial instinct was to decline," Mosley shared with People. "As a cisgender woman, it felt misaligned for me to embody such a role. I embrace my queer identity, but I'm not transgender." Mosley reminisced that Maya's revelation coincided with Caitlyn Jenner's public transition. Torn between continuing her role or stepping away, Mosley's friends advised, "If you reject this story, it won't be told." Ultimately, she seized the moment to shine a light on the transgender community.
"I am deeply thankful for Maya's character," Mosley expressed. "Those who cherished Maya yet struggled with her revelation were compelled to introspect, even within their own families. 'If I loved her yesterday, why can't I love her today?' This question resonated deeply with me, sparking profound reflections and fostering healing within families and communities, all thanks to that pivotal storyline." She continued, "At a certain juncture, portraying Maya became genuinely unsuitable for me, prompting my departure. Hence, I won't be donning another transgender role."
While ruling out future transgender portrayals, Mosley eagerly affirmed, "I would jump at the chance to embody a character with the same weight and significance that Maya held, undoubtedly."
