Cynthia Erivo's stellar year continues to shine brightly. The acclaimed star of "Wicked," who is a contender for an Academy Award for her mesmerizing portrayal in the film, has been tapped to emcee this year's Tony Awards, as announced on Wednesday. "I am filled with pride and exhilaration to embrace this magnificent honor," Erivo exclaimed in a statement. "I eagerly anticipate guiding the vast theater community through an evening that salutes the splendid performances we have marveled at throughout the year. My hope is to meet the occasion with grace and excellence."
This announcement follows closely on the heels of the revelation that Erivo has been cast in the lead role of "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Hollywood Bowl, which is scheduled to run from August 1st to 3rd. Prior to this, she had lent her voice to the character of Mary Magdalene in the 2020 concept album, "Jesus Christ Superstar, She is Risen," which featured an ensemble entirely comprised of female artists.
Erivo is no stranger to Broadway and its grand night of accolades. In 2016, she garnered a Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her role as Celie in "The Color Purple," and during the ceremony, she delivered a powerhouse performance of the song "I'm Here" from the hit production.
"Cynthia is a standout talent whose deep-rooted connections within the theater community make her the perfect choice to host this year's Tony Awards on CBS," Mackenzie Mitchell, Vice President of Specials at CBS, stated in a press release regarding Erivo's hosting gig. "With her inherent creativity and compelling presence, there is no question that she will orchestrate an evening to remember, highlighting the remarkable achievements of this Broadway season."
Erivo stands just one Oscar victory away from achieving the coveted EGOT status, an elite group of individuals who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. Nominations for the upcoming Tony Awards will be unveiled on May 1st. The ceremony will take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and will be broadcast live coast-to-coast on June 8th on CBS, with streaming availability on Paramount+.
