Amidst multiple nominations for her outstanding contributions to various theatrical productions, Dede Ayite ultimately triumphed at the 2024 Tony Awards, becoming the first Black woman to receive the prestigious Best Costume Design of a Play honor. Her win was a result of her masterful work on the now-concluded "Jaja's African Hair Braiding," a play that captivated audiences with its heartfelt portrayal of West African immigrant hair braiders crafting exquisite hairstyles for local women in a bustling Harlem salon. Set against the backdrop of challenging circumstances that challenged the community to confront their identity as outsiders in their own home, the play written by Jocelyn Bioh, garnered five nominations at the Tonys.

During her heartfelt acceptance speech, Ayite expressed her gratitude to her family, including her brother cheering her on from Ghana, and her collaborative team. She also paid tribute to Bioh, stating, "She wrote such a beautiful piece." She further acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the costume shops and makers, emphasizing, "Without them, I would not be standing here, and the show would not have been as visually stunning as it was."

In the Tony Awards pressroom, Ayite reflected on her historic win, describing it as a "monumental moment." She encouraged aspiring artists, saying, "For those who are just starting out, feeling uncertain and fearful, not knowing what it takes to move forward, I hope this moment inspires you to persevere. Tell the stories that matter to you, the stories you find valuable, and the moment will come for you too. That's what's happening for me right now." She emphasized the importance of community support, adding, "This is not just about me. It's about the community that upholds me, the people who love and cheer me on every day. For me, this is a victory for us all." The 2024 Tony Awards took place at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York, where Ayite's accomplishment will forever be celebrated.
