Ed Sheeran gets real about confronting darkness behind spotlight

Published: Apr 18 2025

Ed Sheeran, a chart-dominating artist renowned for his soul-stirring vocals and unforgettable hits, has recently opened his heart about his personal struggle with depression and anxiety. The year 2022 proved to be a devastating chapter for the creator of the chart-topping hit "Perfect," as he lost his beloved best friend, Jamal Edwards, at the untimely age of 31. Furthermore, his wife, Cherry, faced a harrowing diagnosis of a tumor while carrying their second child. To compound his sorrows, a copyright lawsuit tied him up in court, preventing him from attending his grandmother's funeral.

In an intimate conversation with TIME magazine, Sheeran revealed, "One profound lesson I've learned about depression is that it doesn't disappear with a magic pill." He continued,"In the tapestry of life, there are chapters where joy resonates more brightly, and others where it fades into the background. With each succeeding year, the ache softens, yet it is imperative to envelop oneself in sorrow, rather than shunning it to a neglected, dusty recess of one's heart."

Despite the release of his 2023 albums, "=" and "Autumn Variations," which didn't reach the same stratospheric heights as his previous works, Sheeran found solace in the wise words of his friend, Sir Elton John, during his challenging times. The "Shape of You" crooner shared, "Elton has experienced decades in his career where things didn't go smoothly, yet he bounced back with triumphs like 'The Lion King.' This is inspiring because it teaches us not to define our careers by our current circumstances."

Earlier, in a surprising revelation on The Tonight Show, Sheeran amazed audiences by disclosing that he has refrained from using a phone since 2015.
