Death holds no terror for Madonna. On February 27th, the 66-year-old Pop Queen reposted a heartfelt note from November 2024 on Instagram, reminiscing about her late mother, Madonna Louise Ciccone, who tragically passed away at the tender age of 30 in 1964, succumbing to breast cancer. In her poignant message, the superstar also disclosed the reasons behind her fearless attitude towards mortality.
"When I was but a child, my mother breathed her last," penned Madonna. "The sight of her exquisite visage in the open casket, and the tender kiss upon her ruby lips as I bid her farewell, etched an indelible mark upon my heart. It left me with a haunting yearning and an overwhelming fear of abandonment. I clung to my father's every step, constantly reminding him that should he ever depart, I wished to be interred beside him."
"My fascination with cemeteries grew. Death held no dread for me, for I knew it was the sole path to reunite with my beloved mother once more," she continued. "As the years rolled on, I lost numerous cherished souls, and began to view death as a gateway to eternity."
Madonna, who shared segments of her note across a grid post and her Instagram Stories, further added, "Even when my lovers deserted me, I perceived it as a form of demise. When they caused me pain, I conducted a ritualistic burial for them. I buried my fear of abandonment before it could consume me."
The "Ray of Light" chanteuse revealed that she found comfort in visiting gravesites, seeking solace amidst the tombstones, and striving to connect with the spirits of the departed. "I wanted to assure them they were not solitary wanderers. None of us are. 'We are all united with God,' as Sister Mary Theresa often reassured me. 'I am the bride of Christ. I am the bride of love,'" she penned.
"These words resonated with such romance in my ears," Madonna mused. "I envisioned confiding in her all my deepest, darkest secrets. 'Bury your fear. Bury your fear,' she would urge me. Then, she would take my hand, and together, we would wander amidst the deceased, bathed in the soft glow of the full moon."
Recently, the "Erotica" crooner announced that she was gearing up to reissue her 1994 album, Bedtime Stories, and was also collaborating with producer Stuart Price on a sequel to her 2005 hit, Confessions on a Dance Floor. In December, she teased fans with a studio video featuring herself, Price, her beau Akeem Morris, manager Guy Oseary, and her twin daughters, Stella and Estere.
"These past months have been a balm for my soul. Songwriting and music-making are the realms where I require no one's permission. I am thrilled to share this with you," she captioned her Instagram post. "Who's ready to embrace new music in 2025?"
