"Magazine Dreams" Cancels 2023 Premiere Amid Jonathan Majors's Legal Trouble

Published: May 28 2024

Jonathan Majors is baring all for his latest cinematic endeavor, yet the exact moment when moviegoers will lay eyes on his performance remains a mystery. After stealing the spotlight as the boxing legend Damian in "Creed III" and portraying the villainous Kang the Conqueror in "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," the actor's highly anticipated film "Magazine Dreams" was poised to hit the big screens.

However, Variety reported on October 27 that the film's scheduled December release has been abruptly yanked from Walt Disney Studios' calendar due to the swirling allegations of assault and harassment surrounding Majors. The actor was arrested on March 25 in New York City following an alleged domestic dispute, to which he has pleaded not guilty, and he is set to face the court on November 29.

Now, the fate of Majors' drama film, which made its world premiere at the esteemed 2023 Sundance Film Festival, hangs in the balance. It remains unclear whether or when the film, which earned rave reviews from critics during its Sundance debut, will find a new theatrical release date.

In "Magazine Dreams," directed by Elijah Bynum, Majors portrays the intense and driven amateur bodybuilder Killian Maddox, who struggles to forge human connections as his unwavering pursuit of recognition pushes him to the brink of collapse. The film, which boasts an all-star cast, explores themes of the American dream, its diverse fabrics, including religiosity, militarism, toxic masculinity, and the absence of femininity.

According to Collider, the film's script, penned by Bynum, was recognized on the prestigious 2020 Black List, which honors the most popular screenplays that have yet to be produced. With such high expectations and accolades, the delay in "Magazine Dreams'" release is undoubtedly a disappointment for fans eager to witness Majors' powerful portrayal on the big screen.
