Early in her career, Selena Gomez often found herself being mistaken for one of her iconic TV personas. During the November 25th edition of 'The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter' podcast, taped amidst an eager audience at Chapman University, the 32-year-old actress gracefully unveiled why she never harbored any resentment for being conflated with Alex Russo, her beloved character from the Disney Channel series 'Wizards of Waverly Place,' which enchanted audiences for four seasons from 2007 to 2012.
"Every Friday night, we'd tape 'Wizards' in front of a live audience, and that thrill was unparalleled. There's nothing quite like eliciting an uncontrollable laugh from a child—it's purity in its purest form," she shared with a touch of nostalgia. "Sometimes, kids would approach me, knowing me solely as Alex. They'd engage in full-fledged conversations like, 'Where's your wand?' It's those moments that etched in my memory, reminding me of our power to bring joy to young hearts," she added thoughtfully.
The singer of "Love On" reprised her magical role for the pilot of the show's spin-off, 'Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,' which she executive-produced alongside her former TV sibling, David Henrie. Speaking to PEOPLE in September about the reunion, Henrie exclaimed, "It was a dream realized. We've stayed in close touch and remain dear friends."
At the premiere of the new series in October, Gomez opened up exclusively to PEOPLE about the evolution of her character since the original show. "I believe we picked up right where we left off, showcasing a mature Justin and an equally grown-up Alex. While curiosity persists about their journey, it felt like slipping back into a familiar rhythm," she revealed, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
