Travis Kelce Reveals What He'll Miss Most About Football If He Retires

Travis Kelce, as the end of his two-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs looms, knows that the feeling of defeat will set in once the game clock finally ticks down. In a recent episode of his and brother Jason's "New Heights" podcast, he revealed what he'd miss most about football when he finally decides to hang up his cleats for good.

"It's those indescribable moments in the big games," he explained. "The feeling of having to rise to the occasion, being there for 70,000 [people] who are all counting on you, not just your teammates, but the crowd that's rooting for you."

The 36-year-old continued, "Those moments of rising to the challenge amidst the heat of battle, in the playoffs and all the big games—that feeling is one I know I'll never experience again."

Travis, who got engaged to Taylor Swift in August, added that leading the Chiefs to three Super Bowls over 13 seasons in the NFL is something he'll always cherish. "Those are the things that you hold onto for dear life," he said. "Especially when you're fortunate enough to be in the playoffs and make a run at it, man, the satisfaction and the feeling of success after all the hard work finally paying off—I think that'll be one of the things I miss the most."

Though Travis has not yet committed to playing another season in the NFL, it's likely an answer will come soon. In fact, he previously vowed to make a decision by early March. "I want to give the Chiefs a fair opportunity, whether I come back or not—or whether they want me back or not," he told reporters in November. "I'd like to make that decision before they've got to get draft picks and free agency opens to fill the roster appropriately."

The Chiefs' general manager Brett Veach also discussed the possibility of Travis walking away from the game, saying during a press conference in February, "I think we've kind of taken a different approach with Travis in the sense that I think we've kind of prepared for either scenario."

"Travis is the best," he continued. "He's an icon, hopefully he comes back and we'll just kind of let that process play out."

If Travis chooses to retire, he'll certainly have a great support system around him, including his brother Jason—who retired from the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2024—and his fiancée Taylor Swift. And of course, the NFL star will have plenty to keep him busy between the brothers' podcast and his upcoming wedding to Taylor.

Regardless of when he walks away from the field, Travis knows it'll be a tough goodbye. As he put it in January, "I've been putting my body through the wringer for the love of it. I do enjoy playing football and the physical aspect of it...I just f--king love that s--t."

"I think there's a lot of love for the game that's still there," he added. "And I don't think I'll ever lose that."
