A Tablet Sends Woody, Buzz and the Gang Into an Existential Crisis in New ‘Toy Story 5’ Footage

Toy Story 5 has come to life at Cinemacon, where the classic Pixar franchise's fifth movie sees Woody, Buzz, and the gang taking on their most formidable adversary to date: modern technology. In this movie, the group is still with Bonnie, now 8-years-old and obsessed with her new tablet called Lilypad (voiced by Greta Lee), as they struggle to find their place in an increasingly tech-obsessed world as analog toys.

Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, and Tom Hanks return as the main trio, joined by a new voice cast that includes Conan O'Brien as Smarty Pants, an electronic potty training toy. In the new footage shown during Disney's presentation on Thursday, Bonnie is gifted Lilypad and immediately becomes obsessed, spending all her hours on it day and night. The toys anxiously look on as her parents finally try to enforce screen time limits and Lilypad is left behind in Bonnie's room.

Jessie confronts the tablet for disrupting the girl's real-life connections, insisting, "Our kid needs to learn how to make friends, and your screen ain't helping." "If it's friends she needs, consider it done," Lilypad responds, and proceeds to send friend requests to all the kids on her dance class. The toys are bewildered as Jessie responds, "That ain't a friend, a real friend would actually be here." Tensions quickly escalate and Jessie eventually attacks the tablet before Bonnie comes running back in and the toys go lifeless.

As Bonnie picks up the tablet, she's thrilled to have new online connections with her dance friends. The reality of the situation hits the toys, as Rex (Wallace Shawn) exclaims, "Extinction, not again!" Hanks and Allen then made a brief appearance on stage, bringing their signature banter before showcasing a second clip with Woody and Buzz reuniting after Jessie called him for help. A montage shows Lilypad roasting Woody for being old and Jessie saying, "The last thing the world needs is more devices. Our time ain't over yet."

Along with co-director Kenna Harris, Andrew Stanton co-directs this movie, having served as a writer on every film in the franchise. Stanton's Pixar directing credits include Finding Nemo and WALL-E. Toy Story films are always a big box office draw, with the last movie earning over $1 billion at the global box office in 2019. The entire franchise has scored over $3 billion in ticket sales.

In addition to Toy Story 5, other entries on the 2026 Disney slate include a live-action Moana, a Star Wars movie featuring Mandalorian & Grogu, and Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars.
