Adam Sandler revealed that the tragic passing of Carl Weathers necessitated a significant rewrite of "Happy Gilmore 2." In an interview with Collider, the actor and comedian, who is reprising his iconic role as Happy Gilmore in the much-anticipated sequel to the beloved 1996 sports comedy, disclosed that Weathers' character, Derick "Chubbs" Peterson, was slated for a prominent return before his untimely demise last year at the age of 76.
"We faced a heart-wrenching alteration. Carl Weathers had a pivotal role," Sandler shared poignantly. "Our conversations brimmed with excitement as we planned his comeback, but then came the devastating news of Carl's passing. It compelled us to revise substantial portions of the script and even reimagine the storyline. We woven numerous heartfelt tributes throughout the film, celebrating Chubbs' legacy. This was, undoubtedly, the most profound change."
Sandler further elaborated that in the initial drafts of the sequel, Chubbs was to have an even greater presence. "In our first conception, he had a son," he recounted. "In my dreams, Chubbs frequently returned, accompanied by a son who harbored resentment towards Happy for contributing to his father's demise."
In the original "Happy Gilmore," Weathers portrayed Chubbs, a former pro golfer forced into retirement after losing his hand to an alligator, subsequently using a wooden prosthesis.
Directed by Kyle Newacheck, "Happy Gilmore 2" will debut on Netflix on July 25th. Returning alongside Sandler are Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and Ben Stiller, while new faces include Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie, Travis Kelce, and Kym Whitley.
Following Weathers' death, Sandler took to social media to pay a heartfelt tribute to his late co-star. "A genuine giant of a man. A wonderful father, actor, and athlete," he penned. "His presence was always filled with joy, wit, and profound wisdom. His loyalty was unwavering, and his humor boundless. His love for his sons knew no bounds. What an extraordinary individual!"
