The waters of Paris are far from safe. Netflix, the streaming giant, is finally taking the plunge into a sequel for its hit French shark movie, "Under Paris," tapping horror maestro and French local, Alexandre Aja, to helm the new project.

Alexandre Aja to Direct Sequel to Shark Thriller ‘Under Paris’ 1

The original film, titled "Sous la Seine" in French (which translates to "Under the Seine"), was directed by Xavier Gens. "Under Paris" starred Bérénice Bejo as a marine researcher who must overcome her traumatic past to save Paris from a mutant shark (and its offspring) that can live in fresh water and is now terrorizing the city. The citizens, especially those participating in a triathlon that the mayor refused to cancel, are in grave danger.

The movie's ridiculous yet infectious fun proved a global hit, becoming one of the most-watched movies on the platform that year. Bejo is expected to return, along with Vincent Roget as producer. However, it's unclear why Gens, who co-wrote the creature feature, isn't returning. The script for the sequel remains a mystery, and Netflix has nothing to say on the matter.

Aja is a master of horror and has already worked in the water monster genre. He made a splash with his clever French slasher movie debut "Haute Tension" in 2003 and then moved to Hollywood to direct a remake of Wes Craven's classic "The Hills Have Eyes" and the adaptation of Joe Hill's novel "Horns" starring Daniel Radcliffe. But he also made the campy hit "Piranha 3D," featuring the carnivorous tropical fish terrorizing a small town in Arizona, and helmed "Crawl," the 2019 movie about a father and daughter trapped in their water-logged Florida home during a Category 5 hurricane, all while being hunted by hungry crocodiles. The Paramount movie, also a hit, starred Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper. Aja's latest film was "Never Let Go," a 2024 survival horror thriller starring Halle Berry for Lionsgate. He is represented by WME, Industry Entertainment, and Hansen Jacobson.
