In Benoît Delhomme's directorial debut for Neon, two inseparable friends are pulled apart by the tragic death of their mutual son in an unforeseen accident. The trailer for 'Mothers' Instinct' showcases Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain as the impeccable suburban wives of the 1960s, Alice and Celine, who lead seemingly perfect lives filled with manicured lawns, doting husbands, and sons of the same age.
However, the serene harmony of their world is shattered when one of their sons accidentally tumbles from a second-floor window, leaving Alice helplessly watching. Guilt, suspicion, and paranoia wedge themselves between the once-inseparable best friends, tearing their bond apart.
"Something is broken inside of me, and I need you," Celine confesses to Alice in a moment of vulnerability.
'Mothers' Instinct' embodies the alluring aesthetics of an Alfred Hitchcock thriller, where the two women engage in a gripping game of cat and mouse. As their sisterly bond unravels and the darker aspects of their maternal instincts come to light, their lavish homes, gowns, and hairdos continue to exude an air of elegance and sophistication.
"Did you put Theo on that balcony to test me?" Alice accuses Celine, only to receive a heartfelt reply from Hathaway's shattered character: "Do you think I'm capable of that?"
This remake of the 2018 Belgian film 'Duelles' is a retro thriller financed by Anton, with Hathaway and Chastain serving as producers alongside Kelly Carmichael under Chastain's Freckle Films banner. 'Mothers' Instinct' will grace select theaters on July 26 and make its digital debut on August 13.
