Netflix's eagerly anticipated music competition series, "Building the Band," has secured a release date, marked with the heartfelt endorsement of the late Liam Payne's family. Premiering on July 9 with its initial four episodes, followed by subsequent installments on July 16 and July 23, this innovative show will see contestants forge bands without ever laying eyes on each other.
Payne's involvement in the program was first revealed last August, just a couple of months shy of his tragic passing in October at the age of 34. According to a Netflix press release, the family of the former One Direction star "has reviewed the series and wholeheartedly supports his inclusion."
The show's trailer, unveiled on June 11, paints a vivid picture of aspiring singers nestled in individual booths, ears attuned to their fellow contestants' performances as they ponder potential bandmates. One singer's mesmerizing rendition of Labrinth's "Jealous" leaves the others enchanted, with one enthusing, "I'm falling in love!" Another exclaims, "I want him in my band!"
The Backstreet Boys' AJ McLean takes the helm as host, while Nicole Scherzinger, a recent Tony Award winner and former Pussycat Dolls member, lends her expertise as mentor and judge. Payne joins her as a guest judge, alongside Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child fame.
The show's official synopsis underscores the crucial role of chemistry in crafting the ultimate band. "All they rely on is musical compatibility, connection, chemistry, and merit," it reads. "What will transpire when the bands finally converge, and factors such as appearance, choreography, and style come into the mix?"
Following Payne's untimely demise, a source close to the production told PEOPLE that the show's creators were left in shock and sorrow. The source further revealed that the "Strip That Down" crooner exhibited no behavioral concerns during filming and was so invigorated by his experience on "Building the Band" that he expressed a desire to continue working with the bands post-production.
"The very last project Liam undertook was this incredible Netflix TV show called 'Building the Band,' which will premiere this summer. And we're dedicating the show to him," McLean emotionally declared at 90s Con in March. "I had the privilege of getting to know him on a personal level, and we shared numerous life experiences, both in sobriety and beyond."
