So, Chris Evans isn't making a comeback for "Avengers: Doomsday"? Well... according to Captain America himself, that's indeed the case. Despite "The Hollywood Reporter" confirming in December that Evans would be revisiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor has now refuted those rumors with conviction.
In a recent interview with "Esquire" magazine, which featured Anthony Mackie on its cover, Evans revealed, "That's not true, though. This narrative resurfaces every couple of years, especially since 'Endgame.' I've simply stopped acknowledging it. Yeah, I'm happily retired!"
Evans has been a pillar in the MCU, embodying the character of Steve Rogers/Captain America with distinction. He first donned the superhero's cape in 2011's "Captain America: The First Avenger" and, after a string of films, bid adieu to his iconic role following 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." Notably, Evans' character shared a bond with Mackie's Sam Wilson/Falcon, who has now taken up the mantle of Captain America (with his solo film, "Captain America: Brave New World," slated for February 14th release).
Mackie, who is also slated to star in "Avengers: Doomsday," was quizzed by "Esquire" about Evans' potential return to Marvel. He admitted, "I didn't know!" He continued, "I caught up with Chris a few weeks ago, and it wasn't even a topic of discussion. At least, he didn't mention it to me when I asked him directly. I said, 'They're bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you joining in?' He simply replied, 'Oh, you know, I'm happily retired.'"
The "Twisted Metal" actor further elaborated, "I found out about the rumors later from my manager. He showed me an article and said, 'Oh, so I guess Chris is coming back.' That's all I know. I haven't laid eyes on the script yet."
This isn't the first instance where an actor has deceived the public about not reprising a beloved superhero role... cough, Andrew Garfield. The actor famously denied his return as Spider-Man for months before astonishing audiences with a cameo in 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
Directed by the Russo brothers, "Avengers: Doomsday" is geared up for a May 1, 2026, release. Robert Downey Jr. is also onboard to portray Doctor Doom in the highly anticipated flick.
