At Thursday's Disney Annual Shareholder Meeting, CEO Bob Iger revealed an exciting development: a sequel to the beloved film "Coco" is currently in the works at Pixar Animation Studios. With a title announced as "Coco 2," Iger shared that the film is still in its nascent stages of creation, with a theatrical release date penciled in for 2029.
The creative team behind the original masterpiece, including director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, will reunite for this cinematic endeavor. Producer Mark Nielsen, whose credits include "Toy Story 4" and "Inside Out 2," will also helm this project. "Although the film is merely at its inception, we are confident that it will be brimming with humor, heartwarming moments, and thrilling adventures," Iger enthused. "We eagerly anticipate sharing more details with you soon."
Released in 2017, "Coco" captivated audiences with its tale of a 12-year-old boy who harbors dreams of becoming a musician. In a twist of fate, he finds himself transported to the Land of the Dead, where he embarks on a quest to find his great-great-grandfather, a deceased musician, to help convince their family to let him pursue his passion for music. The film garnered immense acclaim, winning two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("Remember Me," composed by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez). It also scooped up a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Animated, a BAFTA for Best Animated Film, and Critics' Choice Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Song.
Disney is further expanding the "Coco" universe with plans to introduce a ride-through attraction inspired by the film at Disney California Adventure, promising an immersive experience that will delight fans of all ages.
