Cynthia Erivo, who graced the Oscars red carpet last weekend courtesy of her nomination for her role in "Wicked," has secured her next cinematic endeavor. The acclaimed actress, who has garnered Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Awards, has joined forces with "Past Lives" breakout star Teo Yoo and Isabel May of "1923" fame for "Karoshi," an intriguing action-thriller under the Lionsgate banner.
Takashi Doscher, the visionary behind the 2019 post-apocalyptic thriller "Only," has penned the screenplay and will helm this unique project. Wrapped in a shroud of secrecy, plot details and character insights remain concealed beneath the layers of a kimono, yet "Karoshi" is heralded as a corporate thriller infused with a samurai sensibility. Set against the backdrop of a Japanese-influenced New York City, the narrative weaves a tale of revenge intertwined with the haunting concept of "karoshi" – a term in Japanese that denotes unexplained sudden death linked to overwork.
With a production start targeted for June, "Karoshi" is being produced by Chad Stahelski, Alex Young, and Jason Spitz of 87Eleven Entertainment through their partnership with Lionsgate. Erivo recently garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her portrayal of the emerald witch Elphaba in Universal's "Wicked," a role she will reprise in "Wicked: For Good," scheduled for release on November 21. Her mesmerizing performance during the Oscars opening number on Sunday has also garnered widespread acclaim.
This week, it was announced that Erivo will take center stage as the lead in "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Hollywood Bowl and will preside over the 2025 Tony Awards. Currently immersed in filming "Children of Blood and Bone" alongside a star-studded cast that includes Viola Davis and Idris Elba, she will also make a guest appearance in the latest season of "Poker Face." Moreover, Erivo has teased an upcoming album, releasing the first single, "Replay," on February 28.
Represented by UTA, Entertainment 360, and Peikoff Mahan, Erivo continues to captivate audiences with her versatility and unwavering talent.
