Johnny Depp has made his long-awaited Hollywood comeback, returning to the silver screen for the first time in years with Lionsgate unveiling an exclusive glimpse of him in "Day Drinker." Additionally, the studio has announced that a stellar cast including Manu Rios, Aron Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle have joined forces with Penélope Cruz in this thriller directed by Marc Webb, which is currently being filmed in Spain.
Madelyn Cline also stars in this film, marking a potential Hollywood resurgence for Depp after the tumultuous controversy surrounding his divorce from actress Amber Heard and a UK court ruling that led Warner Bros. to drop him from the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise in 2020.
In recent times, Depp has appeared in films like the French period drama "Jeanne du Barry" and directed "Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness." However, unlike "Day Drinker," these projects were not commercial ventures and were backed by European entities.
Rios and Piper, who recently starred together in Netflix's hit series "Elite," join Boyle, who portrayed Alice Creel in the West End production of "Stranger Things: The First Shadow." Diego Botto's credits span films such as "The Room Next Door," "En Los Margenes" (On the Fringe), and "The Suicide Squad."
In "Day Drinker," Madelyn Cline portrays a bartender on a private yacht who encounters Kelly, a mysterious guest played by Depp. The two soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure played by Cruz, connected in ways that none could have foreseen.
Depp and Cruz have previously shared the screen in films like "Blow," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," and "Murder on the Orient Express." "Day Drinker" is produced by Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Adam Kolbrenner, and Zach Dean, who also penned the original screenplay, with 30West executive producing. This project marks the second collaboration between Lionsgate and 30West, who also teamed up for "Power Ballad," a music-themed comedy directed by John Carney and starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas.
