Sakamoto is back with a vengeance! Toho has unveiled the very first teaser trailer for the upcoming live-action film adaptation of the hit manga and anime series, Sakamoto Days, featuring the "plus-sized assassin" known as Taro Sakamoto. The anime series just made its debut on Netflix in 2025, so if you're in the mood for some adrenaline-fueled action, it's streaming now. This live-action version is essentially a shot-for-shot remake, bringing Taro's story to life on the big screen.

Once the most powerful killer in history, Taro retired from his life of violence after falling in love with Aoi and starting a family. Now, he runs a small neighborhood shop called "Sakamoto Store" and fights with whatever weapons are at hand, rather than relying on any specific ones. He loves his wife and daughter above all else, but his past catches up with him when a 1 billion yen bounty is placed on his head, and assassins from around the world converge on him.
The live-action version stars Ren Meguro as Taro Sakamoto, Aya Ueto as Aoi Sakamoto, Fumiya Takahashi, and Miyu Yoshimoto. The teaser is just 30 seconds long, but it's a fun first look at the film. The decision to keep Taro's glasses opaque and silver in this live-action version is an interesting cinematic choice.
Sakamoto Taro (played by Ren Meguro) was once hailed as the "strongest in history." But one day, he fell in love and abruptly retired from killing! After marriage and the birth of his daughter, Sakamoto became the manager of a small local shop and gained some extra pounds... he bore no resemblance to his former self! But suddenly, a 1 billion yen bounty was placed on his head, and assassins from around the world converged on him.
This live-action adaptation of the wildly popular battle action manga Sakamoto Days is written and directed by prolific Japanese writer/director Yûichi Fukuda, who has directed many movies including Jossy's, Psychic Kusuo, The Untold Tale of the Three Kingdoms, Black Night Parade, Gintama Live Action the Movie, Once Upon a Crime, Saint Young Men: Holy Men vs Demon Army, and Under Ninja previously. The film is produced by Credeus & Avex Pictures and will be released in Japan during Golden Week 2026. No US release date has been set yet, but stay tuned for updates. How does that look?
