Almost four decades after the release of "The Goonies," a sequel to the beloved 1985 adventure film is now in the pipeline. Warner Bros. has entrusted Potsy Ponciroli with the task of penning this highly anticipated continuation. Returning to produce are legends Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus, joined by Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario for Amblin Entertainment, with Lauren Shuler Donner taking on the role of executive producer. However, the director for this new venture remains to be announced.
Based on Spielberg's original idea, "The Goonies" was expertly helmed by Richard Donner, with Columbus providing the screenplay. The film chronicles the journey of a band of plucky kids who embark on a treasure hunt to save their homes from demolition at the hands of a ruthless property development company. At the time, it was a box office triumph, grossing $125 million worldwide, but it became even more significant as a cultural touchstone, celebrated for its endearing characters and timeless catchphrases like "Goonies never say die!"
The original cast, featuring a young Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Martha Plimpton, shot to fame thanks to their roles. While details about the plot and casting for the sequel remain under wraps, Quan hinted to reporters after winning his 2023 Golden Globe that he would be "open to revisiting that character if the opportunity arose." However, he acknowledged that it might not happen due to Donner's passing in July 2021. "Sadly, we lost the captain of our ship, whom I cherish deeply, and I genuinely don't know if there will ever be a 'Goonies 2,'" he lamented.
News of the sequel follows years of speculation about its development, including Plimpton dispelling rumors on Instagram in September 2024 by stating that the follow-up film was "not real."
