H.E.R. has unveiled the captivating music video for her soulful anthem "The Journey," penned by the prolific Diane Warren, featured in the forthcoming Netflix film, The Six Triple Eight. This monumental production recounts the inspiring tale of the sole all-Black, all-female battalion that valiantly served during World War II. Exclusively premiered by The Hollywood Reporter, the nearly four-and-a-half-minute masterpiece interlaces H.E.R.'s heartfelt concert performance with intriguing snippets from the upcoming cinematic gem.
Warren, a seasoned Oscar nominee with 15 bids under her belt for Best Original Song, still awaits her elusive Academy Award victory. Remarkably, she holds the distinction of being the most nominated woman in Oscar history without a win in any category, although she has been honored with an Honorary Oscar. Meanwhile, H.E.R. herself stands as an Oscar winner for Best Original Song in 2021 for "Fight for You" from Judas and the Black Messiah, alongside her five Grammy Awards.
Sharing insights on "The Journey" and its deep ties to the film, Warren, a veteran songwriter who has collaborated with luminaries such as Celine Dion, Cher, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Taylor Swift, enthused, "The narrative of The Six Triple Eight is a testament to resilience and perseverance. I am immensely proud to contribute to bringing the narrative of these remarkable women to the forefront."
"Tyler Perry and his team have crafted a mesmerizing film that inspired me instantaneously," she continued. "Having met H.E.R. over a dozen years ago, witnessing her remarkable journey and growth, and being a minor part of it, marks a beautiful, full-circle moment. I am thrilled to unveil this music video to the world—each of us embarks on our unique journey, and I hope this resonates deeply with yours."
Directed by Tyler Perry and penned by him based on Kevin M. Hymel's article, "Fighting a Two-Front War," The Six Triple Eight boasts an ensemble cast that includes Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Moriah Brown, Jeanté Godlock, Jay Reeves, Jeffery Johnson, Baadja-Lyne Odums, Donna Biscoe, Gregg Sulkin, Scott Daniel Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Dean Norris, Sam Waterston, and Oprah Winfrey.
Perry produced the film alongside Nicole Avant, Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, Keri Selig, and Carlota Espinosa, with Peter Guber and Kerry Washington serving as executive producers. Perry's film, according to its intriguing logline, is "inspired by the first and only Women's Army Corps unit of color to serve overseas in WWII. Armed with an extraordinary mission and unwavering determination, these unsung heroes spread hope and shattered prejudices."
Scheduled for a limited theatrical release on December 6, the film will subsequently stream on Netflix from December 20 onwards, promising viewers an immersive and unforgettable cinematic experience.
