James Gunn's highly anticipated film *Supergirl*, starring Milly Alcock, has officially confirmed its genre. This upcoming blockbuster, centered around Superman's cousin, stands as one of the major projects in the DC Universe, alongside *Lanterns* and *Man of Tomorrow*.
In an exclusive interview with *Rolling Stone*, Gunn was asked whether the looming war between meta-humans and humans, teased at the climax of *Peacemaker* Season Two, would factor into *Lanterns* and *Supergirl*. "No, no," Gunn clarified. "Both of those elements are woven in. We knew these stories were integral parts of our original vision, so they’re embedded in the overall tapestry, but they also stand as their own unique entities."
When discussing *Supergirl*, Gunn emphasized that the film will be "a cosmic adventure" reminiscent of the *Guardians* franchise. This hint about what audiences can expect should come as no surprise, given that space plays a pivotal role in the narrative of the *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* comic.
According to *The Direct*, *Supergirl* will be the second film in James Gunn's DCU lineup and the fifth release in Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the comic focuses on Kara Zor-El's odyssey through space, accompanied by Krypto the Superdog, and is narrated from the perspective of Ruthye Marye Knoll—a new alien character whom Kara encounters. Ruthye is on a quest for justice, seeking vengeance for her father's murder at the hands of Krem of the Yellow Hills.
In addition to Milly Alcock, the film will feature a star-studded cast, including David Krumholtz, Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Jason Momoa as the infamous bounty hunter Lobo.
*Supergirl* is set to soar into theaters on June 26, 2026.
