On a Sunday evening, the AFI Fest was graced by the reunion of two Hollywood luminaries—Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman—as they premiered their new film, Song Sung Blue, in which they embody the roles of two struggling performers who form a Neil Diamond tribute act. This is a tale of perseverance and passion brought to life by two actors who tapped into their musical souls, never allowing their dreams to fade.
Hudson gushed over her on-screen partner on the red carpet, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "It's hard not to feel magic with Hugh; he's a magical, sparkly man. His youthful spirit and generosity of spirit are boundless. I feel like it's hard not to fall in love with him; he's truly wonderful."
Recalling their first time singing together, Hudson said, "We dove in, and it was like finding our vibe. Recording for a recording is one thing, but recording live, which we were doing, was a different beast. It was fun to discover the imperfections and what we were going to do that day. It was also a great way for us to get to know each other, as we spent hours in the studio—before we played our intimate married couple on set, we had already spent quality time together working on the music."
Writer-director Craig Brewer added his perspective on that day, recalling, "It was truly magical. Getting them into the studio for the first time, watching them sing in harmony with each other, it was just beautiful."
Brewer continued that during filming, "the whole crew just said the same thing—they were like, 'This is what we wanted, we just didn't know we wanted it.' And it was infectious; everybody on set every day would gather around the screens and just see this chemistry between the two of them."
