The renowned American film director, Kevin Smith, has recently offered his candid insights into James Gunn's latest interpretation of Superman. In a conversation with Deadline, Kevin heaped praise on the newly released trailer of Superman, highlighting its refreshing portrayal of humanity and modern political narratives. "It feels more comic book-inspired than ever," remarked the 34-year-old director.
Kevin emphasized that the revival of Superman's iconic trunks on the outside and the inclusion of a dog were delightful touches that hadn't been seen in the past decade. "I believe it's a brilliantly clever move," he said. "Unless they harm the dog, which could also be a dramatically potent choice. But as it stands, it's just so enchanting," explained the director of Dogma.
Furthermore, Kevin noted a prevalent theory that the ascendancy of either Batman or Superman in cultural prominence is intricately linked to the national mood of the United States. He revealed, "When America is thriving and prosperous, oddly enough, Batman emerges as the dominant character, embodying a dark fantasy where everything goes wrong." Conversely, he added, "Superman rises to prominence whenever the country is facing adversity or needs assistance, making him the strongest character during such times," Kevin mentioned.
Reflecting on this, the director of Tusk observed, "Based on this theory, it seems that Superman is poised to make a significant impact at the box office with this film." "People are yearning for hope right now," he remarked.
Kevin also commended the trailer for depicting the story from "the vantage point of a journalist, especially if it's Lois Lane." "Having James answer for aspects that were never considered when the character was first created resonates deeply in today's era, where doing something good inevitably intertwines with politics. It's a clever marketing strategy for the movie," the director added.
Meanwhile, James' Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11.
