Next month, Prime Video will unveil one of the culminating ventures by the legendary producer Norman Lear, who sadly passed away on December 5, 2023, at the ripe age of 101. Entitled "Clean Slate," this heartfelt drama stars Laverne Cox and George Wallace, weaving a tale of a father and daughter, Harry and Desiree, embarking on a journey to mend their fractured bond after an estrangement spanning over two decades.
Wallace portrays Harry, a forthright, old-school car wash proprietor in the Deep South, whose world is suddenly turned upside down when his long-lost son arrives at his Mobile, Alabama doorstep, presenting as Desiree (Cox), a fiercely proud transgender woman. What begins as a fleeting visit for Desiree takes an unexpected turn when her New York City art gallery loses funding, forcing her to share a roof with her father once more.
Navigating not just her strained relationship with Harry, but also the whispers and judgments stirred by her identity within their church community, Desiree's journey is further complicated by a rift with her closeted best friend and choir director, Louis (D.K. Uzoukwu). Meanwhile, romantic sparks fly as Mack (Jay Wilkison), Harry's trusted deputy at the car wash, and his aspiring big-city dreamer daughter Opal (Norah Murphy), both take an instant fancy to her.
Harry, too, finds himself contemplating newfound love as he and Louis' mother, Ella (Telma Hopkins), grow increasingly close. Yet, his rivalry with his neighbor Miguel (Philip Garcia) rages on, promising to be a lifelong battle of wits until the very end.
"Clean Slate" is a creation borne from the collaborative genius of Cox, Wallace, and Dan Ewen (of "Dear Santa" fame), who double as executive producers alongside the late Lear and Brent Miller, President of Production and Development at Lear's ACT III Productions. Ewen co-helms the comedy series with executive producer Simran Baidwan.
On February 5, all eight episodes of "Clean Slate" will premiere on Prime Video, inviting viewers into a world where past wounds are healed, identities are embraced, and love blossoms in the most unexpected places.
