Cameron Diaz isn't eager to attach a definitive label to her Hollywood comeback. After a decade-long absence from the silver screen, the actress has made a triumphant return with Netflix's "Back in Action," and in a recent interview with Empire magazine, she was asked whether this signaled a permanent return. "I'm not quite sure how to perceive it. It's a tricky question," she elaborated. "Declaring it so makes it a commitment. I hold the prerogative to decline any future film offers just as much as I reserve the right to accept them if the timing feels right. I'm not carving out any specific path. I'm simply open to whatever aligns best with my family's and my own aspirations at any moment."
The former "Charlie's Angels" star, who graced numerous romantic comedies in the late '90s and 2000s, further clarified which genre she has no intention of revisiting. "Rom-coms are out; mom-coms are in," she joked.
Diaz has become a household name thanks to her unforgettable roles in romantic comedies like "The Holiday," "My Best Friend's Wedding," "The Other Woman," "What Happens in Vegas," and "In Her Shoes." Her latest venture, however, "Back in Action," is an action-comedy co-starring Jamie Foxx.
The film revolves around former CIA agents Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Foxx), who are forced back into the world of espionage when their covert identities are revealed. This project also marked a reunion for the two actors, who previously collaborated in 1999's "Any Given Sunday" and 2014's "Annie" – Diaz's last on-screen appearance before her hiatus.
"I thought if I were to return to acting, the only person I'd want to do it with is Jamie," she said of Foxx. "Honestly. I had other offers come my way, but I kept declining, saying, 'No, I'm not doing it. I've made it clear… Wait, did Jamie ask? Jamie Foxx? Oh, I'd definitely do a movie with Jamie!'"
In the past decade, Diaz welcomed two children, daughter Raddix and son Cardinal, with her husband, Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden. She also ventured into the wine industry in 2020, launching the clean wine brand Avaline alongside partner Katherine Power.
"Back in Action" premieres on Netflix this Friday.
