In the captivating trailer for A24's comical venture, "Friendship," Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson vividly illustrate that some friendships are destined never to blossom into best-buddy bonds. Penned and directed by Andrew DeYoung, this feature film is slated for a May theatrical release by A24, following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness lineup. The ensemble cast is rounded out by Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, Josh Segarra, and Billy Bryk.
"Friendship" revolves around Craig (played by Robinson), whose earnest endeavors to forge a connection with his neighbor Austin (Rudd) inadvertently threaten to derail the lives of both men. In a poignant scene from the trailer, Rudd candidly confesses to Robinson, "Look, we had some genuinely enjoyable moments, but perhaps it's best if we part ways. I don't see this friendship continuing." Subsequently, Robinson voices his own exasperations, stating, "You all embraced me too swiftly. You can't do that."
The film is produced by Johnny Holland, J.D. Lifshitz, Raphael Margules, and Nick Weidenfeld. "Friendship" made its world premiere at TIFF on September 8, 2024.
Rudd, who recently starred in last year's "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," will soon be seen in the films "Death of a Unicorn" and "Anaconda." In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Michael Rechtshaffen praised, "Having amassed a loyal fanbase as a pioneering figure in cringe comedy through his hit Netflix sketch series 'I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson,' the rubber-faced star and co-creator elevates his craft with 'Friendship.' This innocuously titled flick offers a delightfully disconcerting portrayal of male bonding, delivering some of the year's most thunderous laughs."
