Rooney and Kate Mara are poised to take the cinematic world by storm as they star in "Bucking Fastard," a freshly announced venture from thelegendary filmmaker Werner Herzog. According to Deadline, Herzog himself will pen and helm this intriguing film, marking a significant milestone: the first-ever collaboration between real-life siblings Rooney and Kate on a silver screen project.
Rooney's most recent foray into acting was in "La Cocina," a 2024 Mexican drama directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios. Prior to that, she shone in Sarah Polley's Oscar-winning "Women Talking" for Best Adapted Screenplay. Her resume boasts an impressive array of credits, including "The Social Network" (2010), "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (2011), "Carol" (2015), and "Nightmare Alley" (2021).
Meanwhile, Kate, Rooney's elder by two years, is gearing up for a double feature at SXSW 2025 with "The Dutchman" and "The Astronaut." She also lends her voice to the Prime Video series "Invincible." Kate's television credits span "Class of '09," "Black Mirror," and "A Teacher," while her filmography stretches over two and a half decades, featuring roles in "Shooter" (2007), "Fantastic Four" (2015), "The Martian" (2015), and "Chappaquiddick" (2018).
Herzog, a towering figure in German cinema and a versatile artist encompassing acting, writing, filmmaking, documentary production, authoring, and opera direction, returns to the director's chair for "Bucking Fastard" after his 2019 film "Family Romance, LLC." Since then, he has helmed documentaries such as "Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds" (2020), "The Fire Within: Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft" (2022), and "Theatre of Thought" (2022).
Based on the genuine tale of inseparable twins Joan and Jean, who reside on society's fringes, "Bucking Fastard" promises a compelling narrative. As of now, it remains a well-kept secret which sister Rooney and Kate will embody.
Produced by Andrea Bucko and Emanuele Moretti of Cobalt Sky Motion Picture Group, along with Ariel Leon Isacovitch and Agnes Chu, the production is set to spring into action in Ireland and Slovenia.
