Last year, it was announced that Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Anne Hathaway would be reprising their iconic roles from the original film. More recently, Kenneth Branagh joined the fray, set to portray the husband of Streep's character, fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly. David Frankel is at the helm of the sequel, which finds Miranda grappling with the decline of the magazine industry. The narrative unfolds as the formidable editor is compelled to reconcile with her former assistant Emily Charlton, played by Blunt, who has ascended to the position of an executive at a luxury conglomerate possessing the advertising budget Priestly desperately needs.

Released in 2006, the original comedy-drama, based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel of the same name, followed Anne Hathaway's Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist hired as a junior assistant at a prominent New York fashion magazine, only to face mistreatment at the hands of her demanding editor. The film grossed over $326 million at the international box office and earned Streep a Screen Actors Guild nomination for Best Actress.

In 2013, Weisberger published a sequel to the novel titled "Revenge Wears Prada," and the story was later adapted into a musical that premiered on the West End in 2024. The character of Priestly is widely believed to have been at least partially inspired by former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, for whom Weisberger once worked as a personal assistant. Wintour announced in late June that she was stepping down from her role after a storied 37-year tenure leading the publication.

Blunt and Hathaway reunited for Variety's Actors on Actors series in 2023, reflecting fondly on their time working alongside Streep. Blunt shared that she couldn't contain her laughter during filming, as her character was "so horrible" to Hathaway's most of the time. "We had an absolute blast making that movie," she reminisced. "I don't think any of us anticipated it would become what it did. I get quoted from it every week. It's the film that changed my life."

"The Devil Wears Prada 2" is slated for release in the summer of 2026.
