Thomasin McKenzie, renowned for her roles in "Jojo Rabbit" and "Joy," and Toby Wallace, who captivated audiences in "The Bikeriders" and "Euphoria," are poised to spearhead Frances O'Connor's sophomore directorial venture, titled "Sister Maria Goes to Rome." Embankment Films has embarked on global pre-sales for this highly anticipated project from O'Connor, whose critically lauded film "Emily," starring Emma Mackey, garnered rave reviews upon its 2022 release.
In "Sister Maria Goes to Rome," McKenzie stars as Sister Maria, a vibrant young nun with an unwavering faith, who ventures to Rome on a mission to rescue her cherished village. Here, she encounters a disillusioned tour guide played by Wallace, a man who has lost his direction. According to the plot synopsis, "What begins as a charming clash between her innocent idealism and his world-weary cynicism evolves into an unexpected friendship, proving that ordinary individuals can achieve extraordinary feats when they place their trust in one another. Together, they uncover the truth that when good people champion what is right, hope prevails, hearts transform, and miracles materialize."
Production is scheduled to commence in the spring of 2026 across Lazio and Rome.
"Rome has always been a city of endless possibilities for me, ever since my initial visit many moons ago," shares O'Connor. "I aspired to craft an exhilarating and heartwarming tale for all, centered around a theme of choosing hope and featuring this indomitable nun who radiates positivity. It has greatly uplifted me to create a realm where ordinary folks can triumph. This quote from Frank Capra has been my inspiration: 'That's all I'm here for, truly, to try to convey to you that there is goodness in the world. And that it is magnificent.' I am thrilled beyond measure to breathe life into this magical narrative next spring in Rome, alongside Thomasin and Toby. Thomasin's performances exude a beautiful authenticity and profound emotional depth, whereas Toby brings an instinctual vibrancy to his acting. I eagerly anticipate witnessing the magic they will conjure together in these roles."
Hugo Grumbar, partner at Embankment Films, adds, "The worldwide cinematic audience is currently yearning for heartwarming and inspiring entertainment... 'Sister Maria' will send moviegoers out of the theaters with a spring in their step—her untainted optimism is utterly contagious. We are delighted to collaborate once again with Frances on what promises to be a truly magnificent and motivating film."
Produced by Naomi Despres ("Kill The Messenger," "Lizzie") and Piers Tempest ("The Wife," "Military Wives") for Desmar Films and Tempo Productions, respectively, alongside Guglielmo Marchetti for Notorious Pictures SpA in Italy, "Sister Maria Goes to Rome" boasts Michèle Marshall as executive producer for Desmar Films. Embankment Films handles worldwide sales, co-representing U.S. rights alongside WME Independent.
