The fiancée of Faster Pussycat's frontman, Taime Downe, Kimberly Burch, tragically lost her life after a devastating fall from a cruise ship balcony during "The 80s Cruise" aboard the Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas. The incident occurred on March 2, the inaugural night of the seven-day voyage, reportedly following a "heated" dispute with the 60-year-old rocker.
A spokesperson for the US Coast Guard confirmed that the accident took place approximately 20 miles off the coast of Freeport, Bahamas. In response, the Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter crew and other personnel to aid the Royal Bahamas Defense Force in their search efforts. However, the search was later halted, and Burch's body remains unrecovered.
A representative from Royal Caribbean Group shared with Daily Mail, "Our crew swiftly initiated a search and rescue operation, collaborated with local authorities, and offered support and assistance to the guest's family during this heart-wrenching time. Out of respect for the family's privacy, we have no further details to disclose."
Eyewitnesses described a tense ambiance on the cruise ship. A passenger recounted to The Hollywood Reporter, "An announcement came over the public address system stating that someone had gone overboard, prompting the ship to halt and turn back to search for the individual. The vessel remained stationary for several hours, with safety boats deployed and floodlights illuminating the surrounding area. Another cruise ship nearby also had its floodlights on, aiding in the search. My wife spoke with some individuals on one of the decks who claimed they heard it was a woman and that it was caught on camera, though this couldn't be confirmed.
Eventually, the ship resumed its course. This morning, an announcement over the PA system informed us that the US Coast Guard had taken charge of the search. We arrived in Nassau, Bahamas, a few hours behind schedule, with no excursions canceled. Since then, we've heard nothing more."
The cruise, which set sail from Miami, was intended to visit Nassau, San Juan, and Labadee.
Burch had embarked on the cruise to lend her support to Downe, who was set to captivate audiences with his band during the nostalgic voyage. The duo, who had shared a bond for approximately five to six years, seemed to be reveling in every moment of the trip until the unforeseen tragedy struck. Mere hours before her fateful fall, Burch posted a snapshot of herself and Downe on social media, captioning it, "We've arrived at @the80scruise."
Kimberly Burch's mother, Carnell Burch, disclosed to TMZ that Taime Downe contacted her on Monday to convey the heart-wrenching news of Kimberly's demise. Carnell revealed that it remained "ambiguous" whether Kimberly had "intentionally jumped or inadvertently plummeted" from the cruise ship, expressing her "unwavering belief that Kimberly would never deliberately harm herself." She further noted that Kimberly had indulged in alcohol during the cruise, an unusual behavior for her. Additionally, Carnell mentioned that her daughter had a dispute with Taime shortly before the tragic event. However, Carnell emphasized that Kimberly was not grappling with depression or emotional turmoil and had been eagerly anticipating the cruise, which had scarcely begun.
The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. EST on the cruise's inaugural night, some 80 miles off the coast of Miami.
A passenger, sharing their account on X (formerly Twitter), recounted that Kimberly had "leapt from the balcony of her eighth-floor cabin" after a heated altercation with her partner. The passenger wrote, "Currently aboard the #RCL Explorer of the Seas for the #80scruise. Regrettably, we find ourselves in a 'woman overboard' scenario, with rescue boats already deployed. It's 11 p.m. PST, and we're over 80 miles from Miami. This is grim." They continued, "It appears the woman 'jumped' from her eighth-floor balcony balcony following an argument with her partner. This is our 15th cruise, and this is the first time we've witnessed such an ordeal. The primary concern now is retrieving the woman. The ship has halted and is at a complete stop. Rescue boats have been dispatched for the search. This could be a long, arduous night..."
Despite the swift actions taken by the cruise crew and the assistance from nearby vessels, the search for Burch was eventually called off. To date, neither Taime Downe nor his representatives have issued a statement regarding the incident.
