The American Idol audience was certainly not prepared for what was about to unfold. The long-running singing competition took an unexpected turn during the March 30 episode of season 24, as host Ryan Seacrest announced that they would be delaying the elimination process that night.
"We have had five ways to vote tonight," Ryan began at the end of the episode. "Tens of millions of votes are pouring in at a rate we've never witnessed before. It's truly unprecedented."

To ensure the numbers were completely accurate, he continued, "I was literally just told we are not going to announce eliminations tonight." Ryan joked, "This is the first time it’s ever happened—believe me, I’ve been here every night."
This season, fans could vote for their favorite contestant through comments on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, as well as by voting on the official American Idol website and through text messages. Ryan, who has been hosting American Idol since 2002, added that the results for the Top 12 would be postponed to "make sure we get every vote counted and every vote right."
"We’ll carry forward those votes, get everything verified," he shared, explaining that the eliminations would be "revealed live on this stage" during the April 6 episode.
Not only did this announcement leave the contestants stunned, it even shocked judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, who blurted out in disbelief, "What?!"
But as Luke had discussed shortly before Ryan's explanation, with such a diverse and talented group this year, he wasn't sure "how America chooses" a winner. "You gotta trust your gut as a voter at home and just pick the artists that are on stage that make you smile, make you laugh, make you cry," the 49-year-old said. "I don’t know how America’s gonna do it."
While Ryan has certainly experienced his fair share of firsts as the host of American Idol for the past 24 years, there is one moment he looks forward to every year. "We're looking down to that card and saying, 'The next American Idol is,'" he told Entertainment Tonight in 2023. "I mean, that's the best part for me... I get excited."
And that excitement comes from watching the contestants grow and develop throughout the season and beyond. "We see them with their normal jobs and they just come in for this audition," Ryan said. "They don't know where it's gonna go. They end up looking like glamour superstars onstage and like they've done it for 20 years."
