Andy Dick Says He Has Multiple "Holes" in His Brain After Apparent Overdose

Andy Dick is taking his health seriously following his apparent overdose. Three months after he was found unresponsive on a Los Angeles sidewalk, with a video of him being administered Narcan—a medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose—published online, the comedian spoke out and confirmed that his heart did stop beating during the incident. "Purple, not breathing," Andy recalled of his condition on the March 3 episode of the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast, explaining that he only remembers "waking up in the ambulance." He added, "There were no bright lights."

In the aftermath, the 60-year-old—who's been open about his decades-long struggles with addiction—said doctors performed a scan on his head that showed "about five to seven holes" in his brain, affecting his memory. When host Howie Mandel asked if he meant "lesions," Andy replied, "That's not the word I remember they used."

Now, the Andy Dick Show alum said he's staying at a sober living community where he's "not allowed" to use any substances. "They drug test you," he shared. "I'm not high. I don't take pills. I don't do anything except coffee."

While Andy noted that he cannot guarantee his continual sobriety down the line, he acknowledged that "boredom" is usually what leads him back to drugs and alcohol. "I get bored easily," he explained, admitting that his reasoning "sounds dumb." "I like fun," he continued. "I like a little bit of danger."

However, Howie—who is now sober after developing an unhealthy relationship with alcohol during the COVID-19 pandemic—argued that Andy's thinking is "not protecting" the career he's built. "It's not like I'm out there like, 'I'm gonna wake up and throw it away today,'" Andy reasoned. "[But] sometimes I do actually have that thought."

But for now, Andy said he'll try to remain sober for the sake of his family, including his third grandkid on the way. "I have to, buddy. I just have to," the NewsRadio actor—dad to adult children Lucas, Meg, and Jacob—told Howie, 70. "Do you know how hard it is for me?"
