Bad Bunny has spoken out against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers after he bore witness to an arrest in Puerto Rico, sharing a compelling video of the incident on his Instagram Story. In the footage, the singer lambasted the actions of the officers stationed on Avenida Pontezuela in Carolina, his voice resonating with indignation in Spanish. "Look at those bastards in their RAV-4s," he exclaimed. "They're here in Pontezuela, causing trouble instead of leaving people alone and doing their actual jobs."
The ICE operation in Puerto Rico is a part of a broader crackdown on alleged immigration violations, orchestrated by the administration of President Donald Trump. Over 500 individuals have been detained in Puerto Rico, with nearly three-quarters hailing from the Dominican Republic. Protests have erupted nationwide, including in major cities like New York and Los Angeles, decrying the ICE raids.
In response to the fiery protests in Los Angeles, Trump deployed California's National Guard to quell the demonstrations. However, California Governor Gavin Newsom fiercely opposed this move, formally requesting the Trump Administration to rescind their deployment of troops in Los Angeles County and revert them to his command. The matter is currently being adjudicated in the courts.
Similarly, Colombian-born singer Shakira has also voiced her opposition to Trump's aggressive immigration policies. "It's heart-wrenching to witness," she told BBC News. "Now, more than ever, we must stand united. Now, more than ever, we must raise our voices and make it unequivocally clear that while a country can indeed change its immigration policies, the treatment of all individuals must always remain humane."
