Leighton Meester has lent her talents to a fresh role in "The Buccaneers," acknowledging the intriguing parallels it bears with her iconic "Gossip Girl" character. The star of "That's My Boy" made her captivating debut as Nell in this period drama, with the season two premiere episode airing on June 18. As the first episode unfolded, viewers were enthralled to discover that Nell is, in fact, the biological mother of Nan St. George (Kristine Frøseth).
Meester, whose resume boasts hit TV shows such as "Gossip Girl" and "Single Parents," revealed how portraying Nell presented her with a golden opportunity to delve into a unique and novel character. "I was particularly intrigued by how different this character was and how I could unravel and explore all its facets," she confided to People Magazine.
Yet, she also drew comparisons between her new and former roles, particularly her stint in "Gossip Girl." The talented actress of "Monto Carlo" fame noted that she recognized "certain dynamics, notably the friendships, romances, and all their juicy intricacies," which closely mirrored those in the beloved CW series. "I believe it's a delightful fusion of both worlds," Meester added thoughtfully.
"The Buccaneers," a historical drama, chronicles the journey of Nan (Frøseth) and her circle of friends as they bid adieu to New York City and plunge into the rigid social hierarchy of London. Season one culminated in a shocking twist: Nan marrying Theo, Duke of Tintagel (Guy Rummers), despite revelations of her illegitimacy stemming from one of her father's affairs. In the climactic scene of the finale, Colonel St. George (Adam James), Nan's father, revealed to his wife and Nan's adoptive mother, Patti (Christina Hendricks), that Nan's birth mother was present at the wedding.
The exhilarating new episodes of "The Buccaneers" season 2 debut every Wednesday exclusively on Apple TV+.
