As the spotlight shone brightly on her during her November appearance on Saturday Night Live, pop superstar Chappell Roan belted out, "All you country boys, boasting about knowing how to treat a woman right. Well, only a woman truly understands the art of treating another woman with respect. She's the one who gets the job done right." Dressed head-to-toe in pink cowgirl attire, the 27-year-old Grammy Award winner for Best New Artist enchanted the audience with her unreleased tune, "The Giver."
Four months later, after an extensive promotional campaign, Roan finally unveiled her country-pop anthem. Last month, the singer who goes by "Pink Pony Club" on Instagram, posted a picture of herself donning a suit with the caption, "The Lawyer. Your ex's worst nightmare and she gets the job DONE." Following that, she shared several more snapshots portraying herself as a lawyer, a plumber, a construction worker, and a dentist, all emphasizing her embodying various service roles and getting the job done efficiently. Each character Roan assumes in her promotional materials has its exclusive vinyl record; in total, she is offering five different vinyl single variations for sale.
Roan and her team also erected billboards in various cities, including Nashville, New York, and Los Angeles, showcasing her diverse personas. These billboards also featured a hotline number (620-HOT-TO-GO), which offered a selection of previews for "The Giver," according to an official announcement.
"The Giver" is a timeless country-pop track filled with witty, sapphic double entendres. Though differing from Roan's previous releases, she seems to be well-versed in the realm of country music. Speaking at a Grammy Museum event shortly after her SNL performance, Roan enthused, "[Writing 'The Giver'] was such a delight. I got to bring my country girl experience to the table."
"Country music holds a special place in my heart," the singer revealed in a Thursday night press release. "I grew up listening to it every morning and afternoon on my school bus. It echoed through bonfires, grocery stores, and karaoke bars around me."
"The Giver" marks Roan's first country single since her meteoric ascension to pop superstardom. Her last single, "Good Luck, Babe!", was released in April 2024, just prior to her appearance at Coachella. Although it's unclear which songs will make it onto her next studio album — she also performed an unreleased track titled "The Subway" at festivals last year — Roan asserts that her upcoming album won't be exclusively country.
"Currently, I'm just creating songs that make me feel joyful and playful," Roan stated in a press release. "'The Giver' is my interpretation of country music. May the classic country divas continue to lead their genre, while I simply twirl and offer a little gay yodel for all of you."
