Charli XCX is back, but Brat Summer, it seems, is officially over. The pop star released her new single "rock music" on Friday, accompanied by a music video that perfectly encapsulates the rebellious spirit of the track. As Charli belts out the lyrics, "I think the dance floor is dead, so now we're making rock music," it's clear that this is a departure from her previous sound.
While the extent to which the British star's song can be considered rock is open for debate, there's no denying the obvious rock influence. The song features heavily distorted guitars that clash with her synthesized vocals, creating a unique and compelling sound.

The music video further amplifies this rebellious theme. Charli walks through a black and white city, chain smoking and making out with guys in a stark, monochrome landscape. The video only comes to life when she hits the chorus and makes the "rock music" declaration, adding an extra layer of symbolism to the song.
"For me, it's fun to flip the form," Charli told British Vogue in April of her latest song. "We know there will be people who are bothered by it, but that's fine."
The release of "Rock Music" comes as Charli XCX has become increasingly involved in the film world. She released a companion album for Wuthering Heights in February and co-wrote much of the soundtrack for Mother Mary with Jack Antonoff. Of course, she also produced and starred in her mockumentary The Moment, which came out in January.
In addition to her musical endeavors, Charli is also slated for some high-profile festival slots this summer. She's headlining Lollapalooza in Chicago in July, San Francisco's Outside Lands in August, and Austin City Limits in October. It's clear that Charli XCX is here to make a statement with her music and isn't afraid to push boundaries and explore new sounds.
