Dave Grohl candidly expressed his ongoing struggle to comprehend the loss of Taylor Hawkin, his late bandmate and friend. In a recent interview with MOJO Magazine, nearly four years after the drummer's untimely passing at the age of 50, Grohl shared his personal reflections on the profound impact of his friend's death.

"Losing Taylor," Grohl told MOJO, "was never meant to be." He described how the event had a profound effect on him, turning his world upside down and prompting him to question the fairness of life. "I still have a hard time making sense of it," he added, emphasizing his enduring emotional turmoil.

The Foo Fighters frontman recalled the band's need to create music in the aftermath of Hawkin's death, drawing parallels to their experience following the loss of Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain in 1994. Grohl recounted how the heartbreaking experience of Cobain's passing led him to release the self-titled 1995 album and embark on a tour with bandmates Pat Smear and Nate Mendel, as well as Foo Fighters' original drummer William Goldsmith.

Fast forward to 1997, when Hawkin joined Foo Fighters in Goldsmith's place shortly after his departure, and decades later, the Everlong rockers found themselves in a similar situation. They decided that the best course of action was to make new music and take it on the road, just as they had done in the past.

"We realized this was something we needed to do," Grohl told the magazine. "Because it had saved us once before..." He elaborated on their creative process for their 2023 LP, But Here We Are, describing how they intended to record live with all five members playing along to drum tracks played through speakers in the room. However, the void left by Hawkin's absence was palpable, as Grohl himself ultimately took over drumming duties for the record.

Currently, Foo Fighters are gearing up to release their new album, Your Favourite Toy, on April 24th. The band's current lineup includes Dave Grohl, Smear, Mendel, Chris Shiflett, Rami Jaffee, and new drummer Ilan Rubin.
