Demi Lovato Shares How Husband Jutes Helped Her Overcome "Deep Depression"

Demi Lovato's husband, Jutes, truly illuminates her, and this time, she's letting the world see it. Just six months after their sweet California ceremony, the "Fast" singer reflected on the early days of their—once purely platonic—relationship. "We became friends before we became lovers," Demi told Who What Wear in an interview published on November 19th. "I opened up to him because I was going through a really rough time when I made Holy Fvck."

While Jutes (real name Jordan Lutes) was the perfect collaborator in creating Demi's eighth studio album, he was an even better confidant when it came to discussing her deepest, inner feelings. "I had just come out of treatment, and I was newly sober and raw with my emotions," she explained. "I had nothing to medicate with. He was there for me as a friend, helping me get through this deep depression I was in."

The Disney alum couldn't pinpoint the exact moment she fell for her now-husband, but she does remember a particularly powerful moment when she recorded Holy Fvck's seventh track, "Happy Ending." "I didn't know we were going to become lovers," she recalled. "I definitely didn't know that we were going to get married one day. But that was the session that made me feel safe with him."

For Demi, her lack of certainty at the start was a rare breath of fresh air compared to past failed romances. "I had been in past relationships where I thought, 'Oh, this is the long game!'" Demi noted. "But I hadn't taken care of myself yet." Indeed, the Camp Rock actress was more than happy to exit her version of the La La Land machine. "The universe rewards you when you do the therapeutic work on yourself—I had to do the work," she added. "Because of that, the universe provided. I got myself ready for a life by myself, and then I was able to share it with somebody else."
