Ed Sheeran Says He and Taylor Swift Had a ‘4-Hour Catch-Up’ After He Learned of Her Engagement Through Instagram

Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift's last encounter was brimming with anecdotes! The 34-year-old "Bad Habits" crooner has been sans cell phone since 2015, so when Swift, 35, tied the knot with fiancé Travis Kelce, 36, in August, Sheeran learned of the engagement via Instagram – not directly from her, as one might expect.

However, a long "catch-up" session soon ensued, Sheeran revealed in an Access Hollywood interview published on YouTube on Friday, November 28th. While discussing his new Netflix special, One Shot with Ed Sheeran, he shared, "My perspective is that me and Taylor are mates, and I'll see her when I see her."

"I saw her a week after that happened," he continued. "So I did that interview and then I saw her and we talked in person." The musician added, "I kind of feel like being in touch with everyone—sort of—you lose actual human connection."

When he encountered Swift, he recounted, "We had a four-hour catch-up, filled with life stuff rather than… you know what I mean."

Sheeran also shared some insights into his longstanding friendship with his newly engaged friend, which dates back over a decade to 2012 when he served as the opening act on her Red Tour. "I'm not self-conscious about my relationship with her," the singer said. "We've been friends for very, very many years. We're super close and we see each other when we see each other."

"When we see each other," he added, "we lock back into where we left off."

In a previous interview with Andy Cohen for SiriusXM's Small Stage Series in September, Sheeran first revealed that he found out about Swift's engagement in the same way as the rest of the world. Swift later shared her side of the story on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, explaining that she had a "perfect explanation" for not reaching out to Sheeran sooner.

"He doesn't have a phone," Swift said of Sheeran. "And this is one thing I love about him. It's very eccentric. Love it. But when I'm going through saying, 'Hey, who should we call? Who should we FaceTime?'" She then jokingly continued, "I'm going through my texts and being like, 'Who have I texted within the last month of my life?'" Swift explained that she could only "email him" since Sheeran didn't have a phone and had to find an iPad to set up a FaceTime call.

"This is one of my absolute favorite people on the planet," the Red songstress told Fallon. "Then, when the news came out I was like, 'Oh my God we forgot to call Ed! Oh no!'" She added of her longtime friend, "He's like family. I love him."

In a clip from Swift's interview on the Tonight Show TikTok account, Sheeran chimed in to confirm, writing, "Hello from my allotted iPad time, this is factual." But in his new Access Hollywood interview, he revealed that he now only uses a laptop to check social media – no tablet.

"I've actually got rid of the iPad as well," Sheeran said of his technology use. "So I'm not on anything anymore." One Shot with Ed Sheeran is available to stream on Netflix.
