"Friday Night Lights" turned down this speedster on the run. As Glen Powell recently disclosed, he tried out for several roles in the football-centric series, including that of Tim Riggins—a part that ultimately landed in the hands of Taylor Kitsch. "Taylor Kitsch just nailed that role," the Texas-bred "Top Gun: Maverick" star confided to Jake Shane on the September 24 installment of his "Therapuss" podcast. "It was, like, legendary." Glen, 36, went on to clarify that he was still in high school when he auditioned, in contrast to Taylor, 44, and the other cast members. "Those dudes were all, like, in their mid-20s portraying high schoolers. They had the look down," he remarked, adding, "I didn't exactly embody the cool Tim Riggins vibe in high school, even though I was playing high school football myself."
So, what other "Friday Night Lights" roles did Glen throw his hat into the ring for? "I auditioned for two different quarterback positions, like J.D. McCoy and another one," he said, alluding to the role that eventually went to "Peter Pan" star Jeremy Sumpter. "At that point, I was thinking, 'Hey, I could totally pull this off.' But, yeah, I struck out both times."
Glen likened the whole ordeal to an "out-of-body experience." "There's a certain ease that you need to have when acting," the "Anyone But You" actor explained. "It's such a bizarre gig because you're surrounded by all these people, yet it has to feel incredibly personal and intimate. I was just so acutely aware that this was a job I coveted too much. I was conscious of everyone in the room, all these external factors. And I just couldn't find my groove."
Despite missing out on a starring role in "Friday Night Lights," Glen embraced another fulfilling role: that of a die-hard fan. "I watched every single episode," he declared. "I adored it. I mean, it's a masterpiece of a show. One of the greatest ever, in my opinion."
