Charli XCX stirred up quite a commotion after her weekend one performance at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California, where she hinted that she ought to have occupied the headliner's throne, rather than Green Day. It appears that Green Day has now retaliated with a veiled jab at the pop sensation.
During a DJ set at an afterparty following her Coachella gig last weekend, Charli XCX was snapped posing for a picture adorned with a sash that read, "Miss Should Have Been a Headliner." This photograph swiftly made its way across social media platforms, with numerous fans interpreting it as a dig at Green Day, who had headlined the festival's Saturday night proceedings, with Charli XCX performing just one slot behind them on the main stage.
Green Day seemed to delicately address the elephant in the room when frontman Billy Joe Armstrong took a fan's green "Brat" hat—a nod to Charli XCX's latest album—from the audience and sported it during their set. However, another band member took a much more overt swipe at Charli XCX after their performance.
Following Green Day's Saturday night show, a photo emerged depicting drummer Tre Cool wearing a sash with a handwritten message that read, "Actual Headliner," an unmistakable reference to Charli XCX's sash from the previous weekend.
While Charli XCX has been crafting music since 2008, she catapulted into the limelight last year with the release of her smash hit album "Brat," which garnered immense popularity for its electronic dance tracks.
Nevertheless, Green Day evidently believes that they were the rightful occupants of the headliner's spot, brushing aside any perceived grievances from Charli XCX.
