Just days after the "Only Murders in the Building" actress dropped her music video for "In The Dark" on October 23, the "Oblivion" singer took to the online realm to slam posts criticizing Selena's appearance. "I've been on the internet for 48 hours now, and despite any minor benefits I might have gained, I might have to leave," Grimes wrote in an October 25 X post, quoting a hateful comment. "I watched this Selena Gomez video, and despite a few odd derp shots that people were able to clip and misrepresent how she looks, she looks incredibly beautiful, and is probably one of the most beautiful girls."
The 37-year-old mother of three—who shares X Æ A-XII, 5, Exa, 3, and Techno Mechanicus, 3, with ex-partner Elon Musk—urged those writing mean things about the "Wizards of Waverly Place" alum to consider how they would feel if they were being discussed in such a manner on the internet. "Try to imagine the mental fortitude she presumably has," Grimes continued. "How do we not utterly morally castigate someone who has a post like this blow up and chooses to keep the clout at the expense of everyone's mental health? How do you think little girls feel reading stuff like this about another woman?"
Indeed, she went on to denounce the "high school level" bullying taking place online. "Accounts should be suspended for body shaming en masse," she said. "This is disturbing—in part because it's not even true if you actually watch this video." As the singer of X's "Genesis," Grimes concluded, "This place is unhealthy as f--k, and this being socially acceptable behavior is a death culture."
While Selena—who has been open about her years-long battle with Lupus—herself has not addressed the backlash, she has spoken out before against those who pick apart her face, especially when it comes to what kind of cosmetic procedures she's had done. "Honestly, I hate this," Selena commented on a TikTok in 2024 that speculated about her cosmetic procedures. "I have Botox. That's it. Leave me alone."
