Grimes is making a bold statement with her face tattoo, revealing to the world that she inked her left eye "a few months ago and literally nobody noticed," sharing a makeup-free photo with a large circle encompassing her newly tattooed eye. "Idky this face tattoo is imperceptible," she mused on X (formerly Twitter) on October 22, "but just for the record, it's my favorite tattoo."
But Grimes, who shares kids X Æ A-Xii, 4, Exa Dark Sideræl, 3, and Techno "Tau" Mechanicus, 3, with ex-partner Elon Musk, didn't make the decision lightly. As she further explained on Instagram, "I spent a decade emotionally preparing for a face tattoo, but I guess I drew on my face too much and no one noticed, even my parents."
Calling the cybersigilism design, which blends ancient symbolism with cyberpunk aesthetics, "genius level work," she gave credit to her tattoo artist, writing, "I think @glyphomancer is onto something truly novel and innovative with her work, especially on face tats." "There's a true beauty, delicacy, and innovation here imo," the 37-year-old added. "I feel like tattoos are in a crazy renaissance period that's sort of under appreciated atm."
Grimes has always been a fan of unconventional body art. She had a massive, neo-tribal piece tattooed on her back in 2021, before getting a hand-poked design across her right shoulder and décolletage earlier this year. The "Oblivion" artist also prefers to go against the grain of beauty standards. "Do any other women feel like you're being choked to death on beauty culture?" she wrote on X in April, after coming across an online ad for a makeup store. "Can I go somewhere where someone isn't shoving 'DONT YOU WANT TO BE BEAUTIFUL' down my throat?"
"The insidiousness of what our culture does to young women is insane," she continued. "I feel enraged knowing I won't be able to protect my daughter from this. What a monumental waste of mental space."
