Lady Gaga finds her muse in the arms of her fiancé, Michael Polansky, as she pens her heartfelt tunes. During an exclusive interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, released on March 5th, Wednesday, the "Abracadabra" chanteuse delved into the songwriting process and how her engagement sweetly influenced the creation of "Blade of Grass," a track featured on her soon-to-be-released album, Mayhem, premiering on Friday.
"As a songwriter, life serves as the wellspring of inspiration," Gaga, now 38, elucidated. "If my world revolves solely around promotion, then my lyrics would mirror that. But there are those cherished moments, like when Michael and I pondered over how he should propose, that deserve to be immortalized in verse. We were in our backyard, and I jestingly suggested, 'Just take a blade of grass and wrap it around my finger.' That memory, the look on his face, the grass beneath our feet—they all inspired 'Blade of Grass'."
Despite Gaga's whimsical suggestion, Polansky ultimately proposed with a dazzling oval diamond engagement ring on April Fool's Day.
Reflecting on her journey, Gaga continued on Apple Music, "There was a time when I was consumed by fame and the artifice of controlling my own narrative. My life transformed so drastically that finding inspiration became a challenge. I fought harder to create music and dance later in my career because the vibrancy of everyday life that once surrounded me had faded."
The "Die with a Smile" crooner acknowledged that fans might have wondered about her absence from the promotional limelight. "But living life fully was necessary for me to recharge and give my true gift back to the world," she clarified.
Gaga then shared one of Polansky's endearing declarations that she holds dear. "He said, 'You are an artist, and that's what brings you the utmost joy. We must cultivate that part of you,'" she recounted. "He understood that external pressures could sometimes weigh me down and distract me from my passion."
The couple's romantic saga began in 2020, culminating in an engagement in early 2024. A source revealed to PEOPLE in July that they had been secretly engaged for months. "They shared their blissful news with family and close friends but wanted to keep the engagement under wraps," the insider disclosed.
"Everyone is thrilled about their union," the source added, noting Gaga's unparalleled happiness with Polansky. "They complement each other beautifully. He's excited about and supportive of her career, preferring to stay out of the spotlight while letting her shine. He has his own business priorities, which she supports wholeheartedly."
In September 2024, the 14-time Grammy Award winner gushed about her admiration for Polansky. "I adore my fiancé so deeply," she professed. "He's my best friend, my partner. Being with your best friend transforms everything."
Mayhem will be available for streaming on Friday, March 7th.
