iHeartRadio Music Awards: Teddi Mellencamp Tears Up Sharing How John Mellencamp “Saved” Her Amid Cancer

Teddi Mellencamp is showering her father, John Mellencamp, with heartfelt affection. During the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards on March 26th, where she honored him with the Icon Award, Teddi shared how he "saved" her life as she battles stage 4 melanoma. (See all the celebrity attendees here.)

"For me, 'Longest Days' has been the song that means the most," Teddi shared from the stage in Los Angeles. "In it he sings, 'But nothing lasts forever / Your best efforts don't always pay / Sometimes when you get sick and you don't get better / That's when life is short, even in its longest days.'"

The 2008 track holds a special meaning to Teddi, as the 44-year-old explained, "It was a little over a year ago when I got sick—my life felt short even when the days in the hospital seemed to go on forever. Sometimes you get sick and you don't get better."

But it was John who helped her through her darkest days. "He wasn't going to let that lyric define my life. He stepped up, took control, fought for me, and pretty much changed my life—saved my life," she continued through tears. "We're celebrating the icon, the artist, a man the whole world knows is John Mellencamp, a man I get to call Dad and my best friend."

In turn, the "Jack & Diane" singer took a moment to pay tribute to his daughter, handing her his trophy and saying, "I'm going to take this award and I'm going to give it to Teddi, so that's yours." The 74-year-old—who shares Teddi and Justice Mellencamp, 41, with ex-wife Victoria Granucci—has been by his daughter's side during her yearlong cancer journey.

In fact, John—also dad to daughter Michelle Mellencamp, 55, with ex-wife Priscilla Esterline and sons Hud Mellencamp, 31, and Speck Mellencamp, 31, with ex-wife Elaine Irwin—even gave fans an update on her health in January. "I do have a daughter that's really sick," the "Small Town" hitmaker said on The Joe Rogan Podcast. "It's not f--king fun. She's got cancer in the brain, and she's suffering right now."

Three months before his comments, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum—who was initially given 50/50 survival odds by her doctors—had shared that "no detectable cancer" was found on her scans following her brain surgery to remove the tumors. But amid concerns over Teddi's health following John's comments, the Bravo star set the record straight on what her dad was really trying to refer to.

"When he said the words 'suffering,' he meant how I'm mentally doing," she said on the Jan. 26 episode of her and Tamra Judge's Two Ts in a Pod podcast, "versus how I'm physically doing." At the time, Teddi—who shares kids Slate, 12, Cruz, 11, and Dove, 6, with ex Edwin Arroyave—noted that she was still undergoing immunotherapy and adjusting to a new normal but was hopeful that she would ultimately enter remission. As she put it, "Every day is a new day."

And despite some recent bumps in the road—including a hospital stay after she contracted a rare illness that caused painful blisters all over her body—Teddi has remained positive. "I have a lot of anxiety surrounding today but also a lot of gratitude," the mom of three wrote on Instagram in February while looking back at getting diagnosed with tumors in her brain. "Gratitude for the doctors and nurses who took care of me, gratitude for my family and friends for supporting me, and gratitude for all the love that you have poured into me."

"Trust your instincts," she concluded. "Get checked."
