Aquaman star Jason Momoa has cemented his ongoing commitment to the DC Universe. Confirming via The Hollywood Reporter, Momoa will be lending his talents to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, portraying the enigmatic and ruthless alien bounty hunter, Lobo, who made his comic book debut in 1983.
Momoa has been the quintessential face of the Aquaman franchise within the previous DC era, first appearing as a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), followed by pivotal roles in Justice League (2017), and ultimately leading the standalone film Aquaman in 2018. This cinematic marvel grossed an astonishing $1 billion, marking a zenith for the DCEU films, which culminated with last year’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. However, that final chapter received a lukewarm reception, earning just $439 million and earning mixed reviews from critics.
Momoa harbored a long-standing passion for portraying Lobo and had expressed his desire for the role publicly for years, even during the promotional tour for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. On Monday, he posted a quote from that very tour on Instagram, where he had expressed his hope that DC would extend an invitation for him to embody the character. Alongside the quote, he captioned, “They called.”
Attempts to bring Lobo to the silver screen have been numerous over the years, with filmmakers like Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton toying with the idea, and Dwayne Johnson being rumored to star in Peyton's iteration. In 2018, Warner Bros. and Michael Bay also entertained the notion, but it never materialized into a concrete project. On television, Emmett J. Scanlan breathed life into the character of Lobo in the SyFy series Krypton.
Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen for Omega Men No. 3, Lobo is a blue-skinned, cigar-chomping alien boasting superhuman strength and healing abilities. He has engaged in battles with both heroes and villains, making him a complex and intriguing figure in the DC Comics universe.
"Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" graces the silver screens on June 26, 2026, with the captivating Milly Alcock portraying the iconic heroine. This highly anticipated film marks the second installment in the newly envisioned DC Universe, meticulously curated by DC Studios' dynamic duo, James Gunn and Peter Safran. July will then witness the arrival of Gunn's "Superman" movie, further enriching this cinematic landscape.
Momoa's casting in this latest venture stands out prominently. When Gunn and Safran assumed the helm of the DC franchise, they generously extended an olive branch to beloved actors from the previous era, hinting at their potential to return in fresh avatars. Momoa breaks the ice as the first to embark on this new journey, albeit in a transformed character. Previously, he shared the screen with Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher in the epic "Justice League."
