Jennifer Love Hewitt is oblivious to what adventures Sarah Michelle Gellar embarked on last summer, but this isn't the result of any rift between them. As Jennifer candidly admitted recently, it's merely because she hasn't exchanged words with her 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' costar in nearly two decades. "I haven't laid eyes on Sarah," she confessed to Vulture in an article published on July 18. "We haven't spoken since I was 18, when the first movie premiered."
Indeed, Jennifer, who portrayed Sarah's closest confidant in the 1997 horror flick and reprised her role for the 2025 reboot, acknowledged that when Sarah's seemingly detached response to a question about her return for the sequel went viral in December, she found it amusing. "People urged me to retaliate," recalled Jennifer, now 46. "But I thought, 'What can I say? I haven't seen her in ages.' Our relationship is fine from my perspective. I'm clueless about where this is stemming from."
When prodded about the possibility of reuniting with Sarah, 48, at the new film's premiere, Jennifer added, "I hope so." However, fate did not intervene. Earlier this week, Sarah, who shares a 15-year-old daughter named Charlotte and a 12-year-old son named Rocky with her husband Freddie Prinze Jr., whom she met on the set of the original 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' took to social media after fans noticed that the former costars hadn't reunited at the July 14 premiere.
"For everyone inquiring, I never got to catch up with @jenniferlovehewitt, who shines in the movie," the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' star wrote in a comment beneath her July 16 Instagram post. "I was indoors with my kids during the red carpet event. Unfortunately, JLH didn't attend the after-party either." But Sarah emphasized that their lack of photographic proof didn't signify any animosity between them.
"If you've ever attended one of these events, you'll know it's chaotic," she continued. "I sadly missed out on photos with most of the cast. But that doesn't diminish how incredible I think they all are. Sometimes, moments only unfold in real life, not online."
It appears that Sarah and Jennifer have simply grown apart over time.
