Sofia Mattsson is bidding farewell to Port Charles after a seven-year journey on the hit series. The 34-year-old actress, who has portrayed Sasha Gilmore—the daughter of Holly Sutton (played by Emma Samms) and Robert Scorpio (played by Tristan Rogers)—will be exiting the show. Her swan song, aired on July 18th, featured Jason Morgan (portrayed by Steve Burton) assisting her in fleeing the country to safeguard her daughter Daisy.
For Mattsson, her extended tenure on the show was an unexpected delight. "Initially, I anticipated a brief recurring role spanning just a couple of episodes, so staying this long was never on my radar," she revealed in an interview with TV Insider published on July 18th. "But time flew by in the blink of an eye. From day one, I viewed each day as a chance to confront challenges and grow as an actress, a mindset that never wavered. I genuinely felt like I was learning something fresh every single day, right up until the final curtain call!"
Reflecting upon her initial days on set, Mattsson recounted, "I was a tangled knot of nerves and exhilaration. The breakneck speed of the environment and the intensity of the drama necessitated some time for accommodation, yet I flourished amidst the challenge. I held dear the opportunity to portray Sasha in her nascent days, a character tinged with rebellion; there's an undeniable thrill in breathing life into such a sharply edged personality."
Working on a soap opera that has been running since 1963 also came with its perks, particularly the opportunity to collaborate with seasoned veterans. Mattsson mentioned Michelle Stafford and Donnell Turner as her mentors who guided her through the ropes. "Frankly, most of the cast members are incredibly supportive towards newcomers," she enthused. "Everyone remembers that lost feeling during the initial days!"
Ultimately, her maiden soap opera gig was an unforgettable adventure. As she aptly put it, "All those plot twists and turns are what make it such an exhilarating ride for an actress."
